Registration and Plates
Owners must register their vehicles for the first time at any local Deputy Registrar. There are four conveniently located Deputy Registrar locations and one Limited Authority Deputy Registrar in Butler County :

The first time the vehicle is registered, an original Certificate or Memorandum Certificate of Title is needed to prove ownership. A photocopy of a title is not an acceptable document even if it is notarized or certified. An Ohio Title may be obtained at the County Clerk of Courts.

Only the owner(s) or individuals with Power of Attorney may apply for registration of a vehicle. If the vehicle is leased, a power of attorney from the leasing company is required. If a power of attorney is used, the person that has been assigned as the power of attorney must prove his or her identity with any document from the list of acceptable documents.

A vehicle owner must present a valid Social Security Number to register his or her vehicle, unless the individual has never been assigned a social security number.

The fees for new registrations will be prorated, if applicable. Fees are not prorated for farm trucks or recreational vehicles. License plates expire on the owner's birthday each year.

Safety belts are mandatory for drivers and front seat passengers. Any child who is either four years of age or younger or weighs less than 40 pounds is required to use a child safety restraint that meets federal motor vehicle standards.

No one can operate a motor vehicle without proof of insurance. Ohio law requires liability coverage of $12,500 to $25,000 for personal injury or death and $7,500 for property damage.
