State Tax Liens
The Ohio Department of Taxation files Judgment Liens in the Clerk of Courts office to recover revenue for a variety of taxes, including sales tax, withholding tax, personal income tax, use tax, workman's compensation premium tax and corporate franchise tax.

To release a sales tax lien, payment of the original tax must be remitted to the Ohio Department of Taxation. The debtor is asked to contact the appropriate department within the Ohio Attorney General's Office of Collections and Enforcement to determine the exact amount of tax owed.

Once the tax is paid, the state of Ohio will issue the debtor a Release and Satisfaction of Judgment form. To properly release the State Tax Lien, the debtor must file this form in the Clerk of Courts office. The $73.00 filing fee for filing an entry of satisfaction is payable by cash, check, money order, Visa or Master Card. In addition, all court costs must be paid.

Judgment Liens
The Clerk of Courts has the statutory responsibility to maintain the Judgment Docket for Judgment Liens rendered by the Butler County Court of Common Pleas or other courts. When a Judgment Lien is filed with the Clerk of Courts, it becomes a “Certificate of Judgment” that may be executed upon by the creditor.

To release a Judgment Lien, the debtor must file an Entry of Satisfaction with the Clerk of Courts. The Entry of Satisfaction must be from the court where the judgment was originally rendered. In addition, all court costs must be paid. The cost for filing an Entry of Satisfaction is $5.00. However, other outstanding costs may remain from the original Judgment Lien case.

Reporting Release of Liens to Credit Bureaus
The debtor is often required to submit certified copies of the Release and Satisfaction of Judgment to the three major credit bureaus. An original certified copy of the Release and Satisfaction is accepted as confirmation that a lien has been released in the Butler County Court of Common Pleas Court. The cost of a certified copy is $2.00 per page.
